I've been helping my father fix up an '80 model Sunfish. After it's maiden voyage last night, we realized the drain plug was frozen. I've had a little experience w/ this on a friends '76. So, I tried striking the edges of the slot w/ a screw driver and hammer, then chisel and hammer. No go. Let it soak w/ PB Blaster sprayed on it overnight. Repeated the first steps again this afternoon. No go.
So I pulled out an old trick. Since the boat had sat in the sun all day, I took an ice cube and held it on the head of the screw for ~30 sec. or so, careful not to touch the outer ring. I kept the boat heeled to keep the melting water from touching any more of the outer ring than necessary. Tapped a couple times on both ends of the slot. Gave it a really hard turn w/ a large blade flat head and VOILA! The screw broke free.
So, I coated the insert and screw w/ anti-seize. Should be good to go!
