Looks like 90+ boats ready to go at the NAs

Here are some details on today's action. Racing started late due to a lack of wind, but it did fill in nicely out of the west. The line was not square for the first start, and we had a couple of general recalls and postponements while the race committee worked to fix the line. Both races today were windward Leeward 3 leg courses (2 upwinds.) The legs were 1.1 nm windward long, and even with winds in the low to mid teens it took about an hour to get around the course. There were big variations in pressure both races, so it was important to look for wind. Current may also have played a role, especially in race 2. Given the length of the legs, there was enormous separation between the boats on the left and right sides of the course.

Laser Performance was hosting a BBQ and plant tours at 6 PM, so the RC sent us in at 4. That was a little disappointing as we were sailing in a very nice breeze. Another hot day ahead.

BTW, big international presence in the fleet. The top ten has two Chileans, one Bermudian, a Venezuelan and a Puerto Rican. Lots of other international sailors spread throughout the fleet.

Thanks for the link to the pictures tag I noticed that there is a older boat racing it has the aluminum rub rail, also lots of boats not using sail clips but rope on all grommets.

When you say "sail ties" is that the same as cable ties or zip ties?

No; the racers use very thin line. And if you search the Forum, you will find a bunch of threads on this very topic. For instance, there were several in 2010, some of them posted by 'LAuman'.

If you race at a high-level regatta, every percent improvement is relevant, because almost everybody is an experienced racer/sailor. But if you are out there on your own, enjoying the breeze, who cares...

The update from Saturday. As Geophizz posted elsewhere, a big t-storm came thru before the first race started, so we call came in. We then went back out and waited for wind, which eventually came from the south (the seabreeze.) It picked up enough to be hiking, altho not flat out. In the first race left was the way to go, altho a few smart people worked their way from the right and at least got into the top 15. The second race was more of a "work the shifts" race with plenty of hiking. They then sent us in for dinner. So two days and just 4 races. Will see what is in store for today!

Man, that's frustrating. Blowing 25+ on Wednesday and Thursday and nothing yesterday, and it looks like less today. Couldn't the weather gods have evened things out a bit?

At least I got to go the Herreshoff Yachting Museum in Bristol during the rain delay.

Good Luck today, Unknown!
