got it all wrong at the jetty sunday and put a hole in starboard side of hull and a few scratches to the hull and gunwhale.got insurance on boat so looking to get it repaired proffessionally.just wondered what you thoughts were.the repairee is saying he can make a better repair by putting a inspection hatch adjacent to the hole on the foredeck ive seen techniques for repairs carried out from out side the hole is 5 inches by 2 inches in size the cost is 500 pounds sterling which seems expensive to me .would the hatch be to class rules will it effect the integrity of the foredeck will it effect the resale value.this man built and now repairs big boats.should i take to a laser specialist.
thanks sean

I googled a currency comparison. Today 500 pounds is $915 American. That seems outrageously expensive. Get a couple of more estimates! Don't tell them up front that you have insurance, and yeah, I'd go for the Laser specialist if there's one available.

How old is your boat, anyway?

Merrily

merrily laser 121821 built in england in 1985 so twenty years old still in good condition ,and lots of fun my sailing club is ten minutes from here so i can be on the water in half an hour my work and family commitments dont leave me much spare time ive downsized to laserfrom bigger boats i used to drive 3 hours each way some times i only got an hour sailing at highwater.its a great boat and i missing allready 38 years old sailing 31 of them first proper crash i could have cried .heres hoping it gets sorted soon best wishes sean

$915 American is 2 Laser sails with money left over......

or, at our shop, that is 14 HOURS of labor! I bet it would take my guy 4 hours max for a 5" x 2" hole.....

not calling the guy a liar or a cheat, but agree with 'Merrily' -- get a second opinion before you pay that.

I feel so bad if I did that, I tend to be emotionally attached to my boats. I hope she heals well, let us know how it goes.

yeah chris , i obviously knew id hit the jetty but it has a big rubber fender all round secured by cable ties when i checked the boat i saw the hole ,i expected a scratch the rubber fender had ridden up exposing the metal frame underneath.i was so mad at myself ,i should have sailed right into the shore and jumped out and derigged the boat in the water but i thought id keep my feet dry.i sat on the grass once ashore totally deflated . i have now been in touch with a chap from nottingham i thought he only made and repaired wooden boats a friend off mine worked for him when i used to vist you could not belive the finish he acheived people would walk past there own boat and not reconize it so good is his work.hopefully i shall deliver the boat to him tommorow and it wont be out the water too long .i going to refinish my foils while i wait and clean and repair the cover will take some before and after pics and post them on this site.speak to you later thanks for your support.

Well it's often from simple mistakes that we learn the most. Good luck with the repairs. How are you going to re-finish your foils?

hi chris ,yeah the man that never made a mistake never made anything,i think i read this repair technique on dr lazer or maybe the laser book.the foils are foam cored plastic with steel inserts.when i got the boat there was damage to the centre board i straightened the edge carefully using a hot air gun i held the board against the bench and pressed it flat with a small block of wood .i then used epoxy resin to fill any small holes damage in the board the steel rod was exposed it is only about 3mm inside i sanded it until it was bright and shiny and then applied epoxy resin. i repeated this in places i then used car body filler to fair and fill the board sanding with a flat block until smooth . car body primer firs two coats appied with brush or better foam roller will give a higher build i then wet flat using a rubber sanding block and wet and dry paper with soapy water more coats of primer applied with spray gun and more wet flatting .this is the stage my board is at now .finished in white primer.i am now however going to spray the foils using to pack car paint it is not really suitable for home use because it is toxic you could use 2 pack boat paint applied by brush.you should then have a high gloss finish look briliant but you will slip off the board. so then wet flat the board with 1500 wet and dry. dont alter the size or shape of the foils there arestrict tolerances. dont use power sanders sand gently and carefully using a block.i worked in the car repair industry for ten years repairing car body work and have own wooden boats since childhood so sanding painting are second nature.it takes practise but you can all ways sand it down and start again.you could try your local car repair shop but tell them not to bake the paint after they use an oven to bake car paint to speed up the drying process.speak to you soon sean

i wouldn't spend $915 to repair a laser of that vintage, and I have a laser of that vintage. FOr that money you can find a new hull alone and keep your rigging, and have no resale problems.

Failing that, buy a hole saw and put in the inspection port yourself, fixing it shouldn't be too bad, its making it match the rest of the deck thats so hard. If you just make it plain fiberglass instead of going for the non-skid pattern it will save a lot of time and $$$, but will kill resale value.

hi kevin the hole is in the hull the deck is good . it is covered by insurance.i am going to have to pay the first £50.the hole split really is only 6 inches long and a couple of deep scratches.the insurance company have agreed the bill.basically i have now spent about a day photographing, getting estimates, removing spars rigging etc so the boat can go in for repair.i am sure that i could have sorted it myself in a day. a laser of my vintage cost between £800 to 1000 a new one £3800 a sail £500 centre board £230 maybe we are paying lots more than you for our boating let us know what your paying thanks sean
