    Sunfish Over 330 Pounds Possible?

My '74 was about 230 lbs before I dried it out. Put in a few ports. It takes awhile but the weight does come down.

    Howdy from TX

Greetings, I've posted this before: A different and in my opinion easier way to do the air test: Keep the drain plug screwed in, put a piece of electrical or duct tape over the weep hole and push a ball stem on a bike pump (like the kind you blow balls up with) right through the tape. The...

a little big for my britches..

FYI: 2" pvc pipe fits perfectly into the mast step with no wobble. Perhaps it can be used as a "form".

    Rudder pins

The replacement pin that I got had both the c-clip groove and a cotter pin hole. The clip looked a bit thin so I went with the SS cotter pin only and have had no problems.

Bailer -- Can I hybridize? JUST PLUG?

I just used 100% clear silicone caulk between the bailer and the hull. It's lasted 9 years and still holding. When I put it on, I taped the bailer where I wanted it, then masked the outline of it so the caulk that oozes doesn't get on the hull. That also gives you an idea where to keep it as it...

    Sunfish nose diving?

Had this happen to me on my old boat. The stern came so far up that the rudder was completely out of the water and the boat was at about a 30 degree angle. Standing on the front wall of the cockpit, I dove under the sail before the boat came down and the tiller extension went right through the...

Bailer -- Can I hybridize? JUST PLUG?

If you do replace your bailer with the new plastic one, you have one option that can save you headaches down the road. The new bailer comes with a rubber "O" ring that goes against the hull. Unfortunately it makes the bailer sit about 1/16" away from the hull and makes a fantastic weed catcher...

    Overnighter In Sunfish

Tie the spars together then hoist them with the halyard so they are 3 feet or so above the deck. Secure the end of the spars the the stern with a bungee. Use the now suspended spars as the peak of your tent. Make an appointment with your chiropractor.

    Trailering: rear tie downs issue

I use web straps as well. Home Depot sells them four for $10-$15. If you use rope, learn to tie a Truckers Hitch.

    Water in Mast Hole

When washing or storing, a plastic cup in the mast step keeps it dry.

    Sail Cips vs Sail Ties

Another great way to tie them: Tie them tight to the spar with square or similar knot, then pull on the loop with pliers to tighten knot. Perfect ties every time.

    Mast cleat

Yes, pre-drill and put a dab of silicone in the hole before screwing in.

    Mast cleat

I went four feet up from the bottom. The higher it is, the less halyard stretch from the top of the mast. Too low may interfere with the gooseneck if you want to sail recreationally. Make sure it lines up with the hole in the mast cap so the halyard comes straight down to the cleat. I used a...

    Main sheet block

I have seen several different ones. I and many others use the Harken model HO19. It has a 10:1 holding strength and can be turned off to spin freely with a simple slide switch on the side. A spring under it hold it upright. $53.47 from APS. Makes a big difference.

    No mainsheet block ?

Make sure you put a backing block (hardwood/aluminum/etc) under the new block when you install it. Unless you know a good knee surgeon, get rid of that hook. Also search the forum for past posts on this subject.

    Regatta Participation

This is an idea I've been kicking around for awhile. I hear a lot about getting juniors and even adults into the class and especially racing. How many of you remember your first race? My first race was with my dad and neither of us knew what was going on. The first leg we got ran over by a...

    here's my hull

A different and in my opinion easier way to do the air test: Keep the drain plug screwed in, put a piece of electrical or duct tape over the weep hole and push a ball stem on a bike pump (like the kind you blow balls up with) right through the tape. The tape keeps enough of a seal to do the...

    row row row your fish

One option that I have used when rowing/paddling is to have the rig laying on deck and securing the end of the booms to the bridle. As the rig is on the port side of the boat, I sit on the starboard side and use a single paddle. To compensate for paddling on one side I secure the rudder to steer...

Tiny stainless "C" clip for rudder pin assembly

Some of the newer pins also have a small hole for a stainless cotter pin as well as the C clip option. Those clips can be a bear without a tool. I didn't have a tool the last time I changed one so I went with the pin.
