What do you call "light", "medium" and "heavy" airs

I agree it's probably more useful to define the terms relative to the sailor's weight rather than in absolute numbers as the main reason you're asking is to decide when to power up or depower the rig and that's obviously not going to be the same answer for everyone. Ben Tan (whose book I highly...

Velcro Clew Strap Pops Loose When Sail Powered Up

Mine did. I also replaced it with a Rooster brand and it hasn't happened since. I find it slides better too.

    Rudder Tie Down/Loose Tiller

Good question of course, and of course other prople know much better than me how to interpret these rules. However, I'm struck that under Section 3 - options and addition you may make - paragraph 16a specifically (and very unusually) states that "the tiller and tiller extension are NOT...

    Rudder Tie Down/Loose Tiller

I don't tie any knots when launching. My setup is a loop of shockcord tied and taped to the tiller end by the universal and a bowline tied in the end of the downhaul. When launching I jam the downhaul in the cleat, then thread the shockcord through the bowline and loop it back over the tiller...

Mainsheet caught on Transom --> crash prevention

Some advice from more experienced sailors please. Last Saturday in planing conditions, sailing downwind, I gybed; the mainsheet got caught round the aft corner, a gust hit, and my boat screwed round seemingly uncontrollably onto a reach and straight into the side of another boat... I know...

I'm getting a new laser this week

It's not quite as simple as that. For example, the US federal minimum wage is $5.15. The UK minimum wage is £5.35, or around twice.

Breaking of Carbon Fiber hiking stick?

I'd like to propose a sitting-on-carbon-tiller-extension preventer. Simply tie a shock cord from the extension through the bow fairlead (using a block to reduce friction) and back to the tiller.

UK south-west coast training venue - recommendations?

Here's a very UK-specific query. I'm going to be spending sometime working in Exeter in June and would like to take a few days on the coast gaining some experience of sea sailing a laser. I got into laser sailing only last year and all my experience (such as it is) has been on lakes, apart from...

is this a kicker or a set up ?

The Harken is in Laser's GXD setup. It's supposed to be better design partly because the secondary line has a bit less friction. You can see the difference here: http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d90000/e87451.asp However either is going to be alot better than your old kicker.
