I agree it's probably more useful to define the terms relative to the sailor's weight rather than in absolute numbers as the main reason you're asking is to decide when to power up or depower the rig and that's obviously not going to be the same answer for everyone.

Dare I say it - Rooster again (especially as you're in the UK)

Good question of course, and of course other prople know much better than me how to interpret these rules. However, I'm struck that under Section 3 - options and addition you may make - paragraph 16a specifically (and very unusually) states that "the tiller and tiller extension are NOT...
I don't tie any knots when launching. My setup is a loop of shockcord tied and taped to the tiller end by the universal and a bowline tied in the end of the downhaul. When launching I jam the downhaul in the cleat, then thread the shockcord through the bowline and loop it back over the tiller...
Some advice from more experienced sailors please.
Last Saturday in planing conditions, sailing downwind, I gybed; the mainsheet got caught round the aft corner, a gust hit, and my boat screwed round seemingly uncontrollably onto a reach and straight into the side of another boat...

I'm going to be spending sometime working in Exeter in June and would like to take a few days on the coast gaining some experience of sea sailing a laser. I got into laser sailing only last year and all my experience (such as it is) has been on lakes, apart from...
The Harken is in Laser's GXD setup. It's supposed to be better design partly because the secondary line has a bit less friction. You can see the difference here:

However either is going to be alot better than your old kicker.
The European BA provides 50N which for the average adult size equates to about 11 pounds of foam. As I understand it the US CG approved PFD provides about 15.5 pounds which I guess is about 60N. So in a BA you float less high in the water. THe 50N BA is recommended in the UK for "sheltered water...
