No, mine kayak paddle has worked well, certainly long enough to do the job. While I agree with the concept, isn't a kayak paddle too short to use?
I tried adding a piece of PVC pipe to extend it, yet still grab the existing / extended shafts.
Otherwise, I like to annoy those watching, as I'd much rather enjoy sailing slowly than paddle "fast".
.
For both my Laser and Sunfish I have a canoe paddle on my bow that I hold down with 2 bungees that stay on the painter eye and the mast. But because of the storage area aft of the cockpit in the Sunfish, I have a telescoping one too.

Hi Kevin,Andy, can you show me a picture how you have that rigged with the bungees? I tried a couple different ways and it hasn’t quite worked out to smoothly for me LOL I appreciate it, thanks Kevin
Hi Kevin,
Below are some photos I just took of my Sunfish with my bungee and paddle in place. I've used some large diameter PVC pipe to simulate my mast.
Here's the process. Before you put the mast in the mast tube, lay out the bungee loop on the deck so the mast will pass through it. Step the mast. Then just pass the handle and shaft of the paddle through the bungee and tuck the handle under the bow handle and the blade under the splash guard. That's it.
When you get the length of the bungee loop just right, the paddle is firmly held in place. You don't even need another bungee through the bow handle to hold that end of the paddle. I used a fisherman's knot to join the ends of the bungee and hot knifed the ends to seal them.
You could also just make a longer bungee loop, step the mast then wrap the loop around the mast, pass it through itself and then pass the handle and shaft of the paddle through the bungee loop as described earlier.
Cheers,
- Andy
