what is a traveler?

I was reading the FAQ's and it refers to a traveler. I'm lost, what is it? Thanks, mike

It's the wire near the stern to which one fastens the sheet.

it is also called a bridle when on the sunfish, at least the factory part is.

There are two types of wire bridles. The old style has a loop in the middle;the newer style has no loop. For a variety of reasons, the new style is better. If you are not racing, you may also use a length of line/rope in place of the wire bridle (but you can't race legally with a rope bridle.)
