Water in the hull

Rather than weighing the boat, which would be difficult, can you tell how much water is in the hull by how high the boat rides in the water, un-manned?

are there any bench marks for this?

Only extremely waterlogged hulls would ride noticeably lower.

Proper hull weight is (around) 130 lbs
Imagine 50 lbs of water (which is a lot)
Makes the total weight 180 lbs; or about 40% heavier

Float the hull in a pool
Maybe immobilize the hull (front and stern) to keep it in place?
You would need a pretty accurate measurement system to detect the difference in how high the hull rides in the water
And a dry hull for comparison

Seems rather complicated, but somebody else may have a better idea.

Weighing the boat is not difficult: one or two bathroom scales will do it. Just put the boat on one scale (maybe on its side for ease) or between two scales and add the results.

That seems a whole lot easier than marking off 10ths of an inch down the hull.

metal scrap yards have drive up scales, truck stops have scales, stone yards have scales..

why do you want to know how much water? wouldn't you just want to know how to get it out?

tip it over on its side and pour out the water through the drain plug, then measure it in 5 gallon bucket increments..

or are you wondering how big the leak is and how you're gonna find the leak?

if you're not sure if you have a leak, open up the drain plug and tip it over and find out.. you should be able to tell if water is in your boat by sloshing it about..:)

I think this might be over complicating the weighing issue..., no question it would be one way, but appears to take more effort than is necessary.

Water in the hull isn't always free water. Look in the Knowledge Base (KB) at the top of any page right here at The Sunfish Forum.
