laser cant point as high up wind as stayed boats and the standard rig is not as fast up wind as the radial.
 
i am gettin this info from a more senior sailor wh was talkin alot about how the Ce of the radial sail is different cuz of where the wind enters somhow making it faster up wind. didnt realy catch it all he wasnt speakin a whole lot of english. and the laser cant point as high is because lack of jib and the shap of the mast mmakking the wind enter a a different angle. :confused:
 
You're correct and incorrect. The radial rig in very heavy air can be proportionally faster than the standard, because the sail has a lower Ce and because it has less windage. If it's blowing 40 knots, the standard rig sailor has to dump a larger portion of his sail than a radial sailor to get the Ce to the same spot, meaning more windage and more excess power for the standard rig. That's true with any boat though, and in light-to-medium the standard will still be faster.
Having a jib will generally add to pointing ability but if the laser rig is more effecient than a stayed mainsail to begin with than a jib won't make much difference. A stayed rig is proportionately faster than an unstayed rig in steady, light-to medium powered up conditions. Once conditions get puffy or heavy, the greater flexibility of an unstayed rig makes them faster because they react in a more controlled manner.
 
you guys are just trying to complicate the matter with all this talk of CoEs...

Upwind is easy.... my advice is the same as for downwind, stay between the next buoy and the guy (or guyess) in 2nd place...

If you do that, you can't go far wrong...
