Traveler scratches

On my older Sunfish, I have rubbed out as much as I can, but it appears the metal clamps on the traveler is leaving marks on boat. What is the best fix for this? Is there a later part that does not do this? Trying to keep boat as close to original as possible.

After cleaning and buffing the area, have you tried waxing? You could also try wrapping some electrical tape around the metal wrap, as that appears to be what is causing the scratches.

It's oxidation from the metal crimp and should rub off with little effort.

Not concerned with originality, I swaged new traveler eyes, and used clear heat-shrink tubing to isolate metal from gelcoat.

For originality, I'd suggest dipping the ends repeatedly in varnish or clear lacquer to build up a protective coating.

In the short term, two inches of yellow vinyl tape under each eye-strap would spare some rubbing compound.

Myself? I'd go sailing! :)
