Taping a centreboard case leading edge

My ongoing struggles with getting my board to stay where I put it have forced me to take extreme measures. I'm going to use some tape in the case. Imagine my surprise when I find the rules tell me I have to use a single layer of "general purpose" 30mm x 30mm up to 2mm thick.

What General purpose adhesive tape is 2mm thick? That sounds like specialist tape to me. 2mm is about what you'd need for it to do anything useful.

I look forward to your replies.

Also, how much higher will I be able to point if my centreboard is tilted forward 2mm at the top leading edge of the case. Will I now be champion of the world?

I wish we could like the whole centerboard trunk with that carpet like stuff, similar to 29ers. I get MASSIVE centerboard wobble downwind. It's not even funny, makes steering very difficult.

It is what it is ... and we need to deal with it... If you can't drive down wind , you can use a rag if you want but won't make much difference...

Nascar is always an option... there's no centerboard there

I can drive DW no worries, it just sucks when your going to starboard, and you head down a bit, and your board shudders to the other side, it tends to kill your speed, and in light air, and ruin your speed, and even make your rig shudder. I can deal with it, but it would be nice to fix. Not gonna loose any sleep over it though.

I recon my centreboard has worn down the front of my case, does anyone know whether my boat would be class legal ir i out a small amount of epoxy at the front of the case?? or is tape the only thing allowed?

You're allowed to repair it so that it's filled/shaped as when it was new. That means filling with epoxy or other filler

I have tried using standard duct tape 30 by 30 mm at the front of the CB slot and have found that it wears thru in less than one session on the water and is thus almost useless in preventing wear to the gel coat. I like to protect my boat so for club racing have been using the non hook side of sticky back velcro. This solution seems to be very durable, is less than 2mm thick and is easily available. Unfortunately it is not legal.

Has any body found what can be described as "general purpose self adhesive plastic tape that is durable?

No idea if this is availiable in Australia and what the product name would be: we use something called "Tesa extra power" for such demands, a self-adhesive textile-tape. Comes in different widths - and colors.

Thanks Der_Dude, I have tried a very similar product in Australia. The problem is that it too wears too quickly. Have you tried the Tessa product in this application?

How about double sided tape, with the side facing the board with the backing still attached? It's foam based, so it should be actually approaching 2mm. Is that "general purpose" or is that too specific?

Thanks jsvrolyk, It sounds a bit specific to me but could be worth trying. Have you been using this and do you know its durable?
