Rudder coming off

We bought a Sunfish last year and had it out many times without incident. This weekend, the rudder came off twice shortly after launching. I always make sure it is locked in well. I dont know how this happens as you need to push up on the pin which is spring loaded in order to unlock it. I managed to get it back on but what a pain. Ive heard this is not an uncommon problem. Can anything be done to insure it stays secure??

The old style rudders with bronze fittings used to cause problems, but your situation is unusual with the spring-loaded rudder. My guess is you only got it engaged at the top or bottom of the stern bracket, and not both. Put in on before launching, be sure it is firmly in place, and I bet you are good to go. The bracket on the stern could conceivably have bent, but it is almost impossible to do that, so its not likely. BB
