removing old numbers from sail

The previous owner of the sail seems to have put iron on numbers or some form of adhesive numbers on the sail and then taped them down. However they are now peeling off and underneath it is yellow from the old glue. Any suggestions on what I should do?

These are old, 1970s vintage racing numbers that used to be standard on Sunfish. The glue is nasty stuff and they stain the sail just as your photos show. Try to get all the glue off with soap and water and a soft brush and then try a dilute solution of Oxyclean powdered color safe non-chlorine bleach and cold water. If that doesn't work rinse very thoroughly with water and try a very dilute solution of a chlorine bleach and cold water - try a very small spot with a q-tip and see if it works.

Good luck - these are tough stains to get out. The newer numbers are vastly superior and are easy to remove.
