race start sequence and scoring

Our club has 6 laser sailors who have been diligently training and racing at our club for the past two years. Several of us have attended sailing seminars - Rick White and SailFit - but we're looking for information on the standard scoring system for races used with laser sailing and the start sequence usually used for the class. (Those of us who raced last used a system we believe to be out of date). Two or three of us hope to venture out and participate in regional races and want to be prepared and train our sailors appropriately
thanks

The Standard scoring system wood be the Low Point scoring system the person who gets the lowest amount of points gets first and so on a 1st is worth 1 point 2nd 2 points and so on, The most common starting sequence is 3-2-1.30-1-30-20-10-54321.
3 long for 3, 2 long for 2, 1 long and 3 short for 1.30, 1 long for 1, 3 short for 30, 2 short for 20, 1 short for 10, then 54321

Around here (Massachusetts), the less formal racing (club wednesday nights, frostbiting, etc.) use Appendix Q starts; the more formal regattas use RRS 26 starts. You should probably be familiar and comfortable with both. With Appendix Q starts, learn to keep your nose out of your watch and do it by the sound signals. With RRS 26, you probably need a watch to get a competitive start.
