Pretty top

I know there are articles on how to make the bottom of the hull pretty and scratch free, but what about the top of the hull ? Just bought an old laser and want to make the top of the hull nicer, can I sand wash it, can I paint it ? what kind of paint ? Thanks

When i was in the same position, i washed and then painted the deck (didn't sand because of the textured deck), it took two coats of polyurethane boat paint and it came up in a lovely white gloss, people may say painting is not a good idea because of the added weight but for a couple of pounds extra weight i think it is defiantly worth it if you have an old boat in need of a paint.
