Pintle question

I bought my first Sunfish yesterday!
After going over it, I found that the pintle for the rudder was missing the snap ring. After looking at sunfishsailboats.com, I can purchase the snap ring. They also offer a kit, which includes the pintle, spring and snap ring. It also includes a flat washer and a cotter pin. Is this the "new" version? Do I need to upgrade to this, or is it ok to just go with the snap ring (and put my own stainless flat washer between the spring and snap ring)?

I liked the redundancy of the cotter pin

That is what I thought as well. I went ahead and drilled it and used the cotter pin-washer combo. It appears much more solid.... next a mast cleat!
