I think the switch to the bullseye was a cost-saving move. Happened in the early '70s.

I've used both.
The best system was on my Porpoise II (one block at the masthead, one at the deck). But, like everything else, a maintenance item.
One unexpectedly failed, a Wilcox-Crittenden (which I wouldn't have expected
). 'Fixed with a cable-tie and Leatherman for the long trip back to home-base.
Stored with sunscreen, water bottle, small electric bailer, camera, Smartphone, chewing gum, 2-piece kayak paddle, and sponges through the "Ultimate Inspection Port". (UIP).
Too bad the UIP couldn't be patented and sold.
