OK guys and girls I need a little help, maybe. I'm trying to get the replacement mast cap for the bottom in place and am having a little trouble getting it on. I'm guessing perhaps the bottom of the mast is out of round? If this is the case, is it ok to gently take a C clamp to the mast to make a more harmonious fit? Or am I just missing something everyone else already knows?

Only speculating, but it may be that you have an 'old' mast. The aluminum tubing used for the masts was changed ever so slightly about 10 years ago. The newer masts have a slightly thinner wall. It could be that your (new) cap would fit a new mast, but not an old one. A call to the place where you ordered the cap might help to test this hypothesis.
Of course, this doesn't help your immediate problem. Would some gentle sandpapering of the cap help?
