Making a custom wind vane

Hi all, I'm new to here. I've just read a post about making a custom vang. It seems interesting! I'm interested in making a wind vane. Does anyone have some suggestion?

super cheap one is small piece of wire like on a garden fence,wrapped round the mast with a length of about 8 inch sticking horizontal from it,bend the tip up 90 degrees and attach a piece of ribbon or similar to it,ideal for light weather
