Mainsheet catching corners

Newbie question:

Friday I was sailing in fairly light wind (7 mph?) and I had a new problem, my mainsheet kept catching on one or the other of the aft corners of the boat. What am I doing wrong, or how do I avoid this?

The most common reason for this in light winds is that the mainsheet drags in the water and gets pulled behind the boat, because the boom is moving quite slowly.

The solution is to give a quick pull on the mainsheet as the boom comes across, which flicks the rope up and clear of the corner.

Rolling the boat through the gybe also helps in two ways, firstly, the boom travels more vertically at the start, so the rope keeps higher out of the water, and secondly, the boom moves faster, which also helps stop things from catching.

i always like seeing other people do it first
