Looking to get a Sunfish

I am as green as the grass when it comes to sailing and Sunfish. But I have seen people on these boats and want to get into some simple sailing with my kids. Can I get some advice as to what to look for when buying a boat and how to get into the sport?

CaptVege,

New or Used? A new recreational SF is about $3400, race version about $3900. Used can be all over the board on price with older normally costing less than newer. If you decide to go used, read Wind Line Sails "Buying a Used Sunfish" article by Dan http://www.windline.net/buysf.htm . I recomend a SF that weighs less than 145-150 lbs (130 is ideal and dry), that is newer than 1973, they have the rudder upgrade and storage compartment, 1987 and newer have the rolled gunwales. Think about how much work you want to put into a used SF, bc=lw+$$ (better condition = less work but more $$$). Check your area for dealers or clubs that give lessons on a Sunfish or have SF in their fleet and talk to the poeple you see on a SF. Look on club bulletin boards, ebay, craigslist, newspapers, this forum and also Sunfish Sailor Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sunfish_sailor/ (another good source for info). If you have to travel to a lake (or bay, river, etc) I would also suggest a trailer (easier on your back and to launch) instead of cartopping it (harder on the back and you really need two people for safety). A sunfish is a great, fun, simple little boat that can be sailed for a lifetime (given a little care).
