Just picked up a Laser II...

Hey all,

I just purchased a 1988 Laser II - Sail/Hull number 6708...

It is in really good shape and nearly ready to sail.

The fellow I bought it from warned me that the 'pulley' at the
masthead had given him fits in the past and that I might want
to raise the sail with the boat on its side.

I got a great deal on the boat I feel and would rather spend a
little money to make it right.

I peeked around on the APS site for the parts to tune it up and
ordered what I thought was an entire new assembly - Part #
V15082 Plug & Crane, Masthead Laser II.

Well, here is where I need assistance... have they changed the
entire system for the top of the mast - becasuse what I bought
doesn't look much at all like what I have?

Thanks so much in advance ! (and I really did try to look around
with the search feature first...)

Is your mast 2 part or 1 part? The older ones are 1 part, but 6000's are in the 80's, so should have a 2 part as far as I know. Perhaps your mast is older than the hull?

Where are you at? there may be other L2's nearby you can compare to. I have a 94 boat and have the halyard crane with the fairlead. It makes for a pretty hard hoist but it's possible without laying the boat over.

Thanks for the replies!

I do have a two piece mast.

When I looked at that parts chart before
I ordered m stuff - I noted that there were
the two types.

he way I read it...there was the option of
the other hoist for years some 95...All 96

Given that I have an 88 hull - I went with the
entire assembly of the various parts of the
other hoist option.

I guess my question might have been better
asked... Is it a common practice (and is it even
possible) to swap out what ever you might have
with this new masthead assembly?

Thanks so much all !!!

I think it is possible to convert to the newer sheave box style masthead. You'll just have to do a bit more surgery at the top of the mast. Not sure I'd want to do the cutting on the top of the mast to recess the sheave box into it. Let me know if you try it.

Well,

I have been trying for three days to post the outcome
of my Saturday morning activities...but as I have tried
to share some photos - those posts apparently need
someone's approval.

I had a plastic all-in-one masthead that was in pretty
rough shape.

I replaced it with the aluminum crane, but was not too
keen on the simple eyelet that came from APS.

I used instead a small Harken pulley - she now works
brilliantly!
