I have a new boat that i just got a small scratch on the hull mabe 2 inches long from a screw when i was puttting my boat away. I can see a little blue in the scratch i think that might be fiber glass I dont know. I dont no if i should put gelcoat on my brand new boat. My buddy said not to put gelcoat and that it would make my boat slower in the water. How should i fix it. I dont want to mess with the hull to much. I need help fast.

Fiberglass isn't blue, it's yellowish or light tan. How deep is the scratch?

I don't know why gelcoat would be slow. The whole boat is gelcoated.

You should clean up the area to be repaired (acetone). Then (over)fill your scratch with gelcoat (properly colored, if appropriate) and sand away the excess. Polish (and or wax), if you are so inclined.

PS: your buddy's 'advice' is suspect, to say it nicely.

you have to gelcoat, sand, and buff before you wax. Honestly, a 2"X 1/4" scratch won't slow you down unless you're a world class sailor. Even then... i dont know how much a difference you would notice.

However, being a brand new hull, I would most definately fix it. It's a simple fix.... hardest part is getting the stuff and cleaning the hull.
