Late 60s early 70s hulls had the plate in the crotch of the coaming. If your's is gone you'll need to do some detective work based on features to narrow it to a date window, but you've got that already.

No, have a look at the chart links in reply #6 and you'll see.
If you had a '79 your whole number would look like AMF12345M79G and be branded into the upper right of the transom.
