Help Reading Serial Number

I recently acquired an old Sunfish, Ser. No. 76243. Any help in determining the age will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Where would you find the serial number? I have a late 60's early 70's sunfish and am interested in finding the plate and exact age of her.

Late 60s early 70s hulls had the plate in the crotch of the coaming. If your's is gone you'll need to do some detective work based on features to narrow it to a date window, but you've got that already.

If my sunfish serial # ends in ...7958 does that mean it was made in '79?

No, have a look at the chart links in reply #6 and you'll see.
If you had a '79 your whole number would look like AMF12345M79G and be branded into the upper right of the transom.
