Which is the preferred method for racing and why? Are there other methods?

As far as the sailing is concerned, The end result is the same for both adaptations of the 'Jens'.
I sailed in two regattas where several sailors used the Littleton variety. Once I got home I decided to try the Littleton variety as well because I am overpowered once the breeze gets close to twenty. After spending decent $ to buy new halyards (skinnier and more slippery), I rigged the boat as recommended. It's more complicated, obviously, but quite 'doable'.
Now I am waiting for 'big breeze'...
