ok this is really dumb, but should the gooseneck circle face the port or starboard side of the fish. next question should the halyard line be in front of the gooseneck or back behind the gooseneck (nearest the cockpit). what side of the sail should the mast pole be? port or starboard. thanks

ok i looked at the sunfish rigging guide and all pics have the open circle of the gooseneck toward the starboard side. still unclear of the halyard is it better to be toward the aft or bow side of the neck?

OK, the mast is to starboard of the sail rig. The halyard it tied off to the upper spar which is on the port side of the mast, it passes through the mast end cap fairlead from port to starboard, and follows down the starbord side of the mast to the bullseye fairlead on deck. The halyard enters the fairlead eye from the forward side, exiting toward the horn cleat which is situated on the deck just aft of the mast. If your mast fairlead holes are facing bow to stern turn the mast 90 degrees.

Is it an older mast with a pulley at the top? If so the halyard goes port to stb around the mast then thru the pulley on the deck and back to the cleat.
