I have an 81 laser that i just got that when i step into the cockpit the floor creaks. Is this bad? or is it just because it is old? Should i be worried?

Re: fiberglass

Does it "Flex" or just "Creak"? Are there cracks around the edges of the cockpit?

Re: fiberglass

I've added the words "cockpit floor creaks" to give a more descriptive title to this thread.

You're probably getting a very small bit of flexing in the center. The boat is 27 years old. I suggest you continue sailing it and have fun for now. If it gets worse and you can feel flexing or see cracks address the issue then.

My boats alot newer than yours but it's been used pretty heavily and it's slightly soft in cockpit and some small cracks. No biggie really =P

It may be the result of separation between the cockpit deck and the hull. From what I have learned there are four rigid attachment points - two on the cockpit aft corners, a bead of bondo on the centerline, and one where the cockpit drain meets the thru-hull recess. All are done with bondo. The link below from another thread gives you a good view.

I would check for cracks around the cockpit drain. Also, is the thruhull fitting bronze or plastic? Does the boat leak of feel heavy?

My 1979 had a severe setaration problem which required some surgery. If you want to know for sure, you may want to remove the thru-hull fitting and see if the holes shift and no longer line up. If they do move, then you have separation. If they don't, offer a sacrifice to the Deity of your choice and replace the thru-hull with a new bronze unit. If you want to see how to address the separation problem, the link is below.

Hope this helps.
