Cleaning the hull

Just picked up a used Laser, needs a bit of TLC.

would be interested to hear what people use to clean the hull, is it enough just to wash it down or should it be waxed to reduce resistance ?

I know this topic has undergone some new thinking in the past few years, so look at dates on whatever you find.

There are a number of articles on bottom repair and finishing on drLaser:
http://www.drlaser.org/frm/plfinstMAfW.html

The first one (Fred's) is very laser specific, but requires that you have the "magic password" from your ILCA rep:

The others are more generic.

"How To Make Your Bottom Pretty" (Fred Schroth)

There is a broken link titled "To Wax or Not to Wax" that is supposedly from a thread on the Laser mailing list. It sounds interesting, but even when I went to the archives (http://cerebus.winsite.com/archives/) I couldn't find anything coherent. Hopefully one of the "old hands" will be able to dig up the latest thinking on this topic.

Cheers,

Hello Steve,
Don't wax! Clean your "bottom" with some liquid dish soap or similiar. Wet sand any scratches out (1000 grit minimum). And I like the Starbrite teflon polish (non-wax) to shine her up!

Sanding and wetsanding is not illegal. Rule 11 a), and 11b) clarify this issue.

11. HULL FINISH
(a) Waxing, polishing and fine wet and dry sanding of the hull is permitted, provided the intention and effect is to polish the hull only. Polishing/sanding shall not be used to remove mould imperfections.
(b) Sanding and refinishing of the hull with the intention or effect to lighten the hull or improve the performance, finish, materials or shape beyond the original is not permitted.

If you were planning on sanding your hull, i would advise using a 600+ grit wet/dry sandpaper.
