Attaching Cleats to Spars

I want to attach cleats to my mast and boom. What is the best way to do this? Can I just drill holes and screw stainless screws into the holes?
 
Yes, but use a little sealant (like 5200) to help seal the holes a little. The sealant will also help to slow down the corrosion caused by dissimiliar metals (aluminum mast and stainless screws), but it won't be that big of a deal for many, many, many years, especially if you don't go into salt water.
