Tacking with the longest tiller extension

Yeah, I need to get out and sail with it - it's just on the cold side at the moment!! Just to clarify, when you say pump the main prior to the tack, is that even the case when your two blocked? So, if I've got this right, you'd ease the main, pump it in tight and then ease again to tack?

    It's Amazing how...

Yeah, I sail on an inland lake too and hiking out hard in really changeable and gusty conditions can be nerve racking. Then again, when it all goes wrong the worst that happens is a refreshing swim ;) So, on the start line it's always best to keep the boat comletely flat? What about the...

    'Shark skin' wetsuit?

The wetsuit i have has one of those bare neoprene finishes with a sort of rippled effect. I've heard it describes as a 'shark skin' finish. The upshot is it sticks to everything and I've a feeling it won't be suitable for sliding around the deck of a laser. It seems to me like the type you'd use...

    carbon top section

Not useless just a different opinion from yours. My vent may not have been that clear but my point wasn't that these changes have been introduced to boost sales but that an elite in the class may be creating a divide between boats at the cutting edge of racing and older lasers lying down at...

Tacking with the longest tiller extension

No, Fuzzy Metal, I'm not bragging. I'm totally secure about the length of my tiller extension... er, anyway... :o No, it was a genuine question as the extension I have at the moment seems far too long. To give everyone some idea, it's a carbon extension that came with a carbon tiller. When...

    carbon top section

Interesting thread. I have to say that I'm skeptical regarding this development. In my view the beauty of the laser is that it was always one of the strictest and most uniform one-design classes. True enough it has it's technological limitations but it was very much a boat of its time and stuck...

Tacking with the longest tiller extension

I'm pretty sure the laser I have has the longest tiller extension available - it's one of those carbon versions. However it's so long that when tacking the end will not pass through the corner formed between the forward mainsheet block and boom without either pushing the tiller away excessively...

    It's Amazing how...

Yes, I gather that sailing most dinghies (Fireball excluded) flat in all but the lightest conditions gives the greatest speed and least leeway. But my question is is it ever advisable to sail a Laser with a few degrees of heal to windward? Then again with the Laser's shallow draft I suppose this...

Wetsuits - good deals in USA

Anyone have any experience of sailing a laser in a wetsuit with a 'sharkskin' neoprene finish? Are they too sticky to slide about on the deck in? I've checked various photographes of laser sailing and haven't seen anyone wearing this type of wetsuit.

Replacing metal mainsheet support on boom

It's interesting on that rules page that the strap can be no more than 26mm wide. I recently saw a fairly new laser with a strap from chandler/supplier made of tough sail cloth with velcro (though it was likely to have been riveted to the boom as well) but which was well over the max. width...

Replacing metal mainsheet support on boom

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'm thinking of going with a piece of rope sheath and two aluminium pop rivets. The sheath seems better than a single piece of webbing as it in effect offers two layers of material supporting the underside of the mainsheet - that is on the off chance I catch...

Wetsuits - good deals in USA

I don't live in the US but I do have a wetsuit query that I could do with feed back on. The thing is I have a wetsuit with a 'rippled' neoprene external finnish. It has no nylon layer over the body, arms or legs. This sort of 'shark skin' finnish makes for a really sticky wetsuit - it grips any...

Replacing metal mainsheet support on boom

Thanks for the welcome Lu Does the replacement line have to be 5/6mm according to the rules. The thing is if you could go thinner, say 2/3mm, I might be able to thread the line through the holes where the pop rivets were. This would save me having to do any further riveting. Do you know if...

Replacing metal mainsheet support on boom

Hi, this is my first post, great forum by the way. What I want to know is how can I legally replace the metal support for the mainsheet on the boom. I'm also keen not to weaken the boom in doing so. At the moment I've two ideas in mind - 1. drill out the pop rivets and simply try to thread a...
