    sail care question

I've seen a picture of this and it takes two people to roll it up, impossible by yourself, and more impossible in any wind. Using a PVC tube with the clew and tack bungied to the ends of the tube is much easier. The sail sould optimally be dry though... It can then be slipped into a larger tube...

Did I just not weigh enough?

The sea was quite flat as we were only 200m from shore, but the tip does make sense. I had too little vang on to ease the main effecientley but did this anyway, it kinda worked. But to answer Chris, yes going into irons when trying to sailing properly on the wind was certainly happening -...

Did I just not weigh enough?

I had a most horrible experience racing last w/e. Wind about 20 -30knots. Forecast was up to 35 so it could have been higher... I weigh 165lb and only have a full rig, so off I went...... Sailing downwind wasn't too bad, gybing only when necessary. On the wind though was incredibly hard...

    Bent Bottom Section

The uderlying problem with the radial bottom section is it has only half the wall thickness of a std b/sectn. I believe this to be a big oversight in its design. If you usually sail a std rig and drop to the radial in high winds then bending is common place. Our club has a stack of bent...

    4.7 vs. Opti

My word of warning is not to push young kids too fast into a boat which is 'only a bit too big' I'm sure this has happened to lots of forum readers themselves (me included) and i remember at the time it scared the bejesus out of me, even though I new how to sail. I suppose if you get reliable...

    Hi Everyone

Merrily, all these questions....... 'Frightening with Ainlies book' = wild angles sailed downwind. Trying to get a surf by sailing hi, almost on a conventional reach, then bearing right away to sailing by the lee - probably an angle change of 90 degrees. Also the huge roll tacks in light...

    Dagger Board Issues

I find this tricky as well. One problem is, if you put silicone around the screws it lubes the whole assembly and the tips splay way apart. Any good tips for the tips? Apparently having a loose bungy is advisable as well (as it tends to lift the plate), all it does is satisfy the rulez...

    By The Lee!

The reason you wont have heard it too often is most boats avoid it like the plauge. Stayed boats can't get their booms far enough forward and are under danger of crash gybing if they attempt it. Also the air flow to spinnakers is not ideal at all. The concept i can't quite gather with the...

Rudder problem. There must be a better way

Plan B is to perminantley fix your rudder in a downwards (and optimal*) position by tightening the bolt hard, which should be oversized. Then all you do (on the ramp) is connect in your tiller to the rudder stock, tie the uphaul tight (all this effectively does now is hold the tiller in...

    Sailing by the Lee

My first race is over and done with and it was sailed in about 2-3 knots of wind strength, flat seas. Now, I have fully boned up on Ben Ainslie's book and he fully supports sailing by the lee to the bottom mark. - It didn't work... plus none of the sailers in our club seemed to bother...

    Hi Everyone

Welcome to the club - although 3 months sailing in my first single handed dinghy doesn't qualify me any more than you. I found Ben Ainslie's book very helpful, lacking in some basics and rather frightening at times but if you have a bit of nowce you can learn a fair bit (yet to master sailing by...

Soooo, I bought a Vanguard Dealership.....

Well Mr George, encouraging to hear you are doing some 'special deals'.... now is your chance to shine, we await with bated breath. By the way i have just had to wait 1 week to buy a sail from a shop in San Francisco. They had to order it from the east coast - hopefully this is not a common...

What are Lasers actually selling for?

(first post for me....!!!!!!) I forked out $NZ 4350 ($ US 3100) for my 1988 laser here in New Zealand. All pretty good condition though, mostly updated everything except for foils, sail and boom. Bought only 3 months ago and had my first race in our winter series last weekend. V. light...
