Thank you Lali, great insight and analysis! As I'm leaning towards a used boat, probably my choices will be limited to what's available; and to what I'd like to add after. If it was a new boat -based on all the collected wisdom, I'd go with carbon package (as I'd go with full options on a new car).
Thank you very much Redstar for your insight and advice, much appreciated!
I belong to the 80s Laser generation -old vang- and in those days we didn't have much issues with bending our masts. Seems that the evolution in gear has made this a common risk.
Thank you Lali for your insight and comments, much appreciated. I see your point (good to know about tiller/traveller improvement), so I guess better to go with carbon on a new boat, so it's fully up-to-date. Give my regards to the Sibelius monument! ')
Dear All, I’m seeking some advice. I’m in the process if buying a Laser after many years of absence, and I’m trying to understand the advantages, or pro & cons of going for the new carbon gear, or to stick with aluminum.
I’m a masters sailor, my weight is 62kg/136 pounds, and plan to race...
I've been using a Salus PDF since the start of this eason and I'm quite happy. So comfortable, I don't remember I'm wearing it. And the maple leaf at the back is cool !
Yes, Lasers have been built in both Brazil and Argentina during the 80s and 90s too. The colour schemes were different from the Performance Sailcraft Canada boats, and even sails were locally manufactured by NorthSails with a blue blackdrop for the logo instead of the official red one.
Well, Jackson has a good point, changing hulls so often certainly keeps you from having much attachment to your Laser perhaps.
In Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay almost every Laser (Snipe, Optimist, 470, etc.) would have a name though. I named my first Laser "Muttley" ("Patán"), you know, the dog...
New to the NA Region, I have noticed while browsing regatta results that boat names are not listed...
Is it just space saving on the charts, or here in North America it isn't customary to name your Laser?
Martin
Thank you Tracy, well I was wondering...
You know, for example the SouthAmerican Region was formed years after the individual national Districts were in place... And in their case, authorities are picked at the national level, and then they coordinate the Regional calendar and issues...
I am new to Laser sailing in the NA District, and I'm intrigued about the following:
1- Why is Mexico not part of ILCA-NA, even though it's a North American country?
2- Why don't Canada and the US have individual national authroities? (like other countries belonging to regional districts...
Alex, very interesting pictures!
I am considering doing the same, and bringing a new Laser to Ottawa. Please, can you tell me what happened at Canada Customs? Do they tax you for bringing a Laser from the US?
