Top of Mast Step

The inside front part of the top of my Mast Step is worn down to the glass.I have tried the Teflon strips,spaying it and the lower mast section with Mclube.Have tried recoating with gel coat but it does not last.
Not really concerned with the cosmetic look but concerned that I may wear right thru the Fiberglass.Any advice would be appreciated?
 
I tried the Teflon strips but they made the situation worse for me as they collected sand that became embedded, resembling sandpaper! Likewise, lubes may also collect sand. If you launch exclusively from shores that are free of sand they may help, though. In any case, keeping the mast completely clean is important.
