Sunfish Mast Float

I was wondering if anyone had ever made a mast float for a sunfish? They are so expensive to buy and I have noticed that people have made them for other boats, however I can't find any information for sunfish. Does anyone have any idea what material it would be best to make it out of and what sort of size or buoyancy would be needed? Or would a trial and error approach be more beneficical?
