News SANJL 2007 - Day 2

This past Saturday, 27 sailors defied the weather forecast and were rewarded with a beautiful day of sailing on Swartswood Lake. In typical SANJL form, the wind was very shifty, moving from the NNE to the West. The challenges from the shifty conditions were amplified by large changes in wind strength that brought speeds between 5 and 15 kts. With such wild conditions, no position was ever safe because big gains and losses could happen at any point. The most successful sailors were those who were able to recognize and adapt to the changing conditions.

When the day was finished, Derek Jackson escaped with top honors. After completing his second year as a member of the University of New Hampshire sailing team, Kevin Buruchian looked very sharp tactically to finish a close second. Mark May rounded out the top three.

The challenger division was a tight competition between Frank Blesso, Becky Haszko and Bob Tomsey. Frank Blesso was the most consistent sailor and won first place. After struggling with the heavier winds early in the day, Swartswood Lake’s Becky Haszko showed great improvement to take second place. Bob Tomsey from Highland Lake was only a point behind Becky in third.
