That is a good point. I think your thought is more likely, butAnother possibility could be current is carrying them beyond the mark causing the overstanding.

While my Able-class entry was angling for a start, I went below to check charts for current (seeking channels and likely tidal effects). While down there, I got a "feeling" in my gut, looked out a port, and saw a 36-footer sliding backwards after climbing halfway-up a 45-foot yawl. No sound had accompanied the "T-boning".
Five minutes later, with me at the helm at the start, we came close to giving the Committee Boat a nudge!
I'm sure Sunfish sailors have some similar tales to tell...
