new guy needs mainsheet advice

I've just started club racing in my new ('79) Laser. I am learning fast, having fun and getting wet. One problem, though. On tacks, I sometimes snag the mainsheet under the back corner of the deck. This leads to uncontrolled reaching, collissions, bad words, etc. etc. Sheeting in tight helps, but in higher winds, this doesn't seem the best option. Suggestions, please!

The reason is the same reason it catches when you gybe: as the boom comes across, the slack mainsheet falls in the water and gets dragged back as the boat moves forward and so gets caught round the transom corner. The trick is therefore to stop the mainsheet falling in the water.

Pull in the mainsheet as you luff up - this also speeds up the turn and minimises rudder drag (considering the Laser's massive weather helm.)

When you gybe you should give it a yank just as the leech looks as though it is going to gybe or roll gybe.
