mast step doughnut

Have a 4 year old boat (177611) and mast step is leaking. No obvious damage and always careful with sand and grit. Local boat builder has cut hatch and will repair but noticed that the doughnut is incomplete around the front. Is this normal? could it be a point of weakness that has lead to problem? Just wanted some thoughts before I go back to Laser.

thanks

That is pretty sad looking "Foam", apparently not mixed right. Below is a pic of an '05.

That said, I wouldn't be sure that was a cause and/or location of the leak. Was there any chance that water stood in the tube, and froze?

I'd try taking some bright/dark photos, to look closer for the crack. Try shining a bright light down the tube, the look into a dark hull. And try a bright light and look into a dark tube (at night). You might be able to see or photograph a bright spot.

I'd also try chipping that "foam" out. If it comes easily, then get it all out, and start over.
