It was getting a little late after the first day of the Florida States at Ft Walton Yacht Club when Sam Grant mentioned that the Finn Masters were bringing a big fleet to the "Meigs Regatta" which is being sailed the same weekend as the Gulf Coast Masters at FWYC. Momentarily overcoming my shyness, I told Sam that the Lasers would have a bigger fleet than the Finns. Thus, a challenge was born. Now we have to live up to the challenge. The Finns seem to think they are superior and will easily outnumber us. I will concede that they will easily outweigh us (especially on a per capita basis)! However, I do not accept that they will outnumber us.
So if you don't have any really concrete plans, live within a thousand miles of Fort Walton Beach, are at least 35 years old, and want to put those old Finn dogs back in their rocking chairs, come to FWYC July 11 & 12 for a really great weekend of sailing, sun, and swapping lies with the fat guys in their bathtub boats!
Don't forget, the Finns have accepted Dave H's 'Biggest Fleet' challenge and are planning on out-doing the Lasers!
We cannot let the Finns outnumber us!! So get your act together, bring a friend or two, and head to Fort Walton Yacht Club the weekend of July 11&12 for some great sailing and hanging out!
Glad to see Austin crew are coming. What about all you folks in the SouthEast and Gulf Coast area? Make your plans, pre-register and come sail! Really gotta show up those Finn boys!
There is a Sheraton 4 Points on the beach that is only about 10min from the club and there is a Fairfield Inn in Shalimar - about 10min the other way. Likely can find lots of condos at vrbo.com
Cmon down. You can contact Fleet Captain, Sam Grant, fwycfleetcaptain@cox.net, for other suggestions on hotels or maybe even ask for local housing. The Fort Walton folks are really helpful.
