Finishing repairs

I'm patching a hole. I've laid down the fiberglass and it's curing right now. I've got wire holding the backing up to the hole. My question is about the wire itself.
When I snip it, what comes of it? I know I can't snip it completely flush with the fiberglass. Do I just put filler over it?

If we use that method we grind the wire below the surface and fill in the area ground.
But we've gone to resin coating the backing material and using the wire to pull it so it will bond and them cutting off the wire/cord so it's originally below the surface and then fill. It's one less step.

A grinder I have. Any recommendations on the grit (or type) of the disc? I've only used a grinder on metal. I wonder if a wire would tear up a sanding disc.
