The Laser Radial and 4.7 Atlantic Coast Championship started off with 2 races on day one in very light and shifty winds. 61 Radials and 8 4.7 were on the line in 2-5 knot winds.

After a short postponement the first race was started in a light northerly breeze. The fleet started cleanly under the I-flag on the first try. The fleet made good progress toward the first mark, but the wind got even more fluky as the race went on. Those who got a good start and clear air got ahead. By the 5th leg the wind was almost undetectable but both the Radial fleet and the 4.7 fleet\ made the finish before the time limit.

After a brief wait, a sea breeze started to fill in and the course was reset for the light easterly winds. By that time there was a ripping flood current which pulled sailors towards the pin at the start. One general recall and the Radial fleet got started. Eight sailors were OCS and a few sailors got hung up in the pin boat.

Right after the start there was a little more pressure on the left side of the course up the first beat. On the second beat it was best to sail on starboard tack in a puff going against the current, and sail on port while in a lull.

In the Radial fleet Christopher Stoke took two bullets to lead after the first two races. John Wallace is currently in second and Mateo Vargas is in 3rd. Connor Swikart leads the 4.7 fleet and Mary Hall is in second and Matt Schofield is in 3rd.

The forecast for Sunday calls for a little more wind, but it’ll be another day for the lightweights.

Results are posted on the 2009 Laser Atlantic Coast Championship website.
