    Varnish or epoxy or....

Interesting points about rollers and fiberglass cloth. I bought some foam brushes so I thought I'd use those, tho I can see where a roller would be easier. Also I thought a couple of coats of epoxy would be enough strengthening for the kind of sailing I do. (Slow and steady.) Also I want the...

    Varnish or epoxy or....

Thanks for the tip, wjejr. Wire hangers are good idea. I figure I can redrill any holes that get clogged. And if the epoxy is thin, it won't affect the tolerances when I reassemble them. (PS Cute dog.)

    Varnish or epoxy or....

I'm about to apply epoxy and varnish as described above to the wooden parts of the '71 Sunfish I bought last year. Rudder, tiller, daggerboard. I've already completed disassembled, sanded, and stained them. Here's my question: should I re-assemble any of it before applying the epoxy, for...

    Rudder Refinish

SC, thanks for the heads up on the West System site and customer service. The two links you sent were very handy. I plan to stain, epoxy, and varnish. Plenty of time before next summer! :-)

    Rudder Refinish

I'm refinishing my daggerboard and rudder. I have almost all the varnish off. I plan to use West epoxy and then put a coat of varnish for UV protection over it. However, one side of the board has a darkish stain that's not coming out with sanding (perhaps from standing water during storage?)...

Patching two 1.25" holes in the deck

L&V, thank you for your prompt and generous replies. That black plug and some marine caulk might be just the ticket. I can use an Exacto knife to carve out some of the flotation material and might escape enlarging the holes altogether. I'm not sure what will hold the plug in there, but I...

Patching two 1.25" holes in the deck

I bought my first SF ('79) and discovered it weighed almost 170 lb. I naively followed some online instructions and drilled two 1.25" inch holes in the deck -- one a few inches aft of the bow handle and the other just aft of the traveler -- as starter holes for inspection ports, only to...
