I just leave my inspection ports open at all times when the boat isn't in use.

What I have done now is dispensed with a shackle for the forstay and just lash it on. Much easier and I can get it a lot tighter.

That isn't much clothing, you could sail in some reasonably cold conditions if you also wore a couple of woolen jearseys and a wooley hat. I wouldn't want to sail in under about 18 degrees c just wearing that. It depends on how long you r going out for though of course.
