I remember doing this sometime in the last 30 years. If you have a long enough mainsheet, you can let out the boom to the bow, almost on the centerline. As long as its not too windy, you can reach and even almost go to weather like this, with the leach leading. Obviously there is serious lee...
actually I think the best bailer is a few short sharp kicks with the foot towards the back of the cockpit, so that any water shoots up and over the side - the best thing the bailer plug is for is draining hose water out while the boat is on the dolly.
Here is what I think the class should do:
Either legalize it ASAP, on the grounds that it doesn't materially affect the performance of the boat, or,
Throw away the complete bailer and redesign a better one, on the basis that the current design is useless - lets update the boat like we did...
Please ...this is not kindergarden. Everything that was done was within the rules, those of you complaining that its against your sensibilities, thats your opinion and you're entitled to it, but its just that - an opinion!
Besides - I went back and viewed the medal race. Goodison and Myrgren...
Myrgren did not choose to match race, it was Goodison's decision. Only the comments from Gary Jobson suggested it was Myrgren's choice - thats laughable and he should be embarassed!
I was surprised that Goodison decided it was neccessary to match race, after all, he would have had to be last...
