Vang mod

Hey all,

I just got my new (1979) Laser and replaced most the rigging since it was old and hard. While I was at it I gave the vang a little upgrade by adding a block and making it an 8:1. I used the figure 2 from this site: http://www.wvaegir.nl/newrig_2.html

Well, didn't go so well once out on the water. Once the vang was tight, I couldn't release it for the run. This resulted in a few unplanned swims when the boom touched the water. Anyhoo, I think part of the problem is that this system requires you to tie 2 extra anchor points. This extra clutter in addition to the cunningham caused too much friction.

Anyone have a simpler solution (without spending $300). While surfing, I came accross this article: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/racing-articles/20857-new-improved-laser-controls.html The picture half way down looks like he is using the stock vang with 2 extra blocks, but the picture isn't clear enough to make sense of it.

What do your modified vangs look like?

Thanks,

Ratio is listed about halfway down the article...

"Now with the new locked off end - you can go back to make a 2:1 with the rest of the 3:1 - (this will make it a 6:1)"
