What are folks thoughts on tiller extension length--particularly for me...a 5'9" 155 pounder. In the 90's I was happy with 48", I got out of lasers, now back in. The hiking stick that came with my boat is 40 inches, too short for me. I just bought a 54 inch fatso jr and plan on cutting it to size, but not until I sail it some. I've only been out in one drifter with it so far and the 54 helped me get up on the centerboard comfortably, but I worry about how it will tack and jibe in light to moderate.
Is it legal to cut it, but rig it to be adjusted depending on conditions?
I see folks sailing with mombo length extentions, how do they get managed in transitions. I remember settling on 48 in the 90s because it was generally agreed it was the longest it could be without really fouling tacks and jibes.
