A new version is running at http://www.tacticat.com for Laser sailors.
- Team racing support
- Improved rules engine
- We have set up a server in Brisbane, tacticat sailors can now connect to Euro, USA and AUS servers to get better response time
- All tacticat boats (lasers, skiffs and cats) have now a Velocitek speedo/GPS to get online info about their sailing parameters (like you would have with the equipment in your real boat)

Tacticat is a non-profit org, owned by and for sailors. Tacticat sailing is free you only have to register (with a valid e-mail) to have a boat with your name and enter the serious races with prizes and trophys.

The only requirement: to have an Internet connection and Java support in your computer (go to www.java.com to download and install if you dont have it).

Addiction

187490 asked what's Tacticat, let's answer that first.

Tacticat is a simple Internet software, a simulator. It was created by sailors to validate tactical decisions and improve the knowledge of rules.
100% of code is written by sailors who race regattas at country or continental level.
It was thinked as a training tool, and become ALSO a game because sailors of many countries and sailing many different boat classes use it to pass some time, to try new approaches and to meet other sailors.
Tacticat software, unlike other very good simulators, is focused only on tactics and rules: no trimming no tuning no nice realistic graphics.
Today we do have 3 different boats (laser, skiff and catamaran), each one just to make emphasis on different tactical aspects. For instance Lasers are there to play the shifts and to think about planing-notplaning.
Sailing fields are open 24x7 for fleet, team and match racing.
Finally, Tacticat works as a non-profit org entity similar to an International Class and efforts are done to make it a nice tool for classes and national bodies in their effort to promote the sailing.

Addiction was initially a major concern. I can say it is no more. The statistical usage profiles show clearly that abuse is very limited. Usually users with Tacticat overdose eventually give it up completely. We envisaged the idea to make a limit for weekly Tacticat sailing but we deemed it unnecesary.
The biggest issue nowadays is behaviour control. As many users connect, from different countries and cultures, some of them optimist sailors under age it becomes important to keep a control of language for instance. We're working hard on that.

Tacticat sailing is in no way a substitute to real sailing. First things first.
