Switching Rigs During a Regatta

I read on another thread that in certain Masters events competitors are allowed to switch rigs (standard to/from radial) during the event (thread http://www.laserforum.org/showthread.php?t=5230).

I was wondering how that works. In effect I would have thought you are then competing in two dirfferent competitions. Or is a radial treated as a "reefed" standard and both standards and radials race against each other ?

Where is this "switching" allowed (e.g. US or Europe as well) ?

The Rig switching is happening in North America - not sure about other areas.

As far as scoring goes, if at any point during the regatta you use a full rig , your totals are in the full rig scoring.

that is definately defiend as illegal in the class rules. There are points when radials can beat full rigs ie when the breeze is cranking.

masters and grand masters( in NA) are allowed under current rules to switch rigs during regattas. grand masters can change wherever/whenever. please realize this is usually before you leave the dock, not out on water between starts. ( but, it could happen). sorry, young guns, this is just one of those exceptions that are given with age.

Unless the experimental rule was re-written, the rig switching is open to anyone at a Master's event where it is being used, including apprentice and obviously GGM. The rule also contains a clause that prohibits the change occuring on the water.
